Teaching with VIPKid and homeschooling my kids has been such a blessing. I’m able to make money without ever having to leave home. And that’s why I’m convinced that teaching with VIPKid is the PERFECT job for homeschooling parents.
Why VIPKid and Homeschooling Works
One reason many of us chose to homeschool our kids was for the flexibility it affords our families. It allows you the freedom to create a schedule that works with the rhythm of your family.
The nice thing about teaching with VIPKid and homeschooling is that you have the flexibility to choose your schedule. That means you can teach before your kids get up, after you get them started on certain tasks in the morning, or after they go to bed at night.
One thing that works well with our family is assigning certain tasks for my boys to complete each morning as I’m finishing my VIPKid classes.
They complete their morning chores (getting dressed, making their beds, etc.) and do certain independent tasks that don’t require Internet (independent reading, handwriting, etc).
Then when I finish teaching, they start on any Internet-based assignments or tasks with which they need my help. It’s usually a smooth transition between VIPKid and homeschooling since everyone knows the rules and expectations.
2. Space & Supplies
One thing that is difficult for many teachers when they start out is finding a place to “set up” their VIPKid classrooms. They aren’t usually equipped with the props and supplies they need to effectively teach online.
As a homeschool mom, you probably already have a designated area where you and your kids complete homeschool each day. This is the perfect place to set up your VIPKid teaching space because it’s where all of your family’s homeschool tools are located.
Working with your own kids gives you an idea of what the parents of our VIPKid students want in an online teacher. They want someone who understands how to connect with kids, who is sensitive to their children’s needs, and who can help their kids be successful.
You want the exact same thing for your own children and that’s why teaching with VIPKid and homeschooling makes so much sense. It is merely an extension of what you are already doing in your own home!
Trust me when I tell you that you would make an excellent VIPKid teacher.
I knew when I left my teaching career to homeschool my boys that I was walking away from almost half of our family income. But I knew this was the calling God had on my life for this season. So, I followed Him without looking back.
After homeschooling for about a year, I knew there had to be something that I could do to earn an income while at home.
Unfortunately, I didn’t know where to start. I knew that I wanted to do something with kids because teaching is my passion.
But how was I going to teach other kids if I was at home with my own kids?
As I started researching work from home jobs, I discovered VIPKid. It was the perfect combination of teaching children one-on-one (for a nice income) while still allowing me to be at home with my kids!
If teaching with VIPKid and homeschooling my kids hadn’t work for me…
- I would NOT still be doing it
- I wouldn’t suggest that other homeschool moms get on board!
The truth is, I still love it! And I believe that it can bless you and your family.
So now that you know how passionate I am about VIPKid and homeschooling, I want to show you what my daily schedule looks like.
My Daily Schedule
My VIPKid Schedule
I currently teach with VIPKid on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday every week. Over time, I’ve changed my VIPKid schedule several times. But that’s why I love this job so much; as my family’s needs have changed, I’ve adjusted my schedule accordingly.
I usually wake up at 6:00 am so that I have 30 minutes before my first class to get dressed and ready.
After more than 3 years, I’ve perfected my morning routine so that I’m sitting behind my computer by 6:20 am. (This gives me a few minutes to make sure that all of the “tech” stuff is working correctly.)
My first class starts at 6:30 am and I teach 5 back-to-back classes, which means that I’m finished teaching by 9:00 am. (This is what my VIPKid schedule looks like!)
As soon as I finish my last class, I write individualized feedback for each of my students.
Since I have an excel spreadsheet full of feedback templates, this only takes me about 20 minutes total…for all 5 classes.
Once I’ve submitted all of the feedback, I prep for the next day’s classes.
To do this, I look over the lessons that I will be teaching the next day to see if any of the props I already have prepared will be used. If not, I just put them away while I’m getting my new props.
Then I go over the PowerPoint slides for the next day’s lessons and pull any relevant flashcards needed to enhance the lesson. Preparing for the next day’s lessons typically only takes me about 20 minutes because I have been doing this a LONG time.
When I first began, prepping took longer because I wanted to be knowledgeable of the information, but I didn’t have much experience with the format of the lessons. Over time, I’ve become very experienced with the content and layout and I’ve created props that coordinate exactly with the lessons, which is why I can prep so quickly.
So in total, I can teach 5 classes, prep, and write feedback in less than 3.5 hours each day.
My Homeschooling Schedule
Once I finish everything for VIPKid, I take about 20 minutes to regroup and prepare my brain to be a homeschool mom! Then I start my homeschool day with my kids.
We’ve had a variety of homeschool schedules over the years, but based on my kids ages and current needs, this is the schedule that works best for us.
Based on my day starting at 6:00 am, I start homeschooling between 9:30 and 10:00 am.
I genuinely love teaching with VIPKid and homeschooling my boys; both have been a blessing in my life. Because of this, I want to make sure that you have the opportunity to see exactly why this amazing work from home option is truly perfect for homeschool moms.
